Jonathan practises exclusively in criminal law, Defending and Prosecuting in the Crown Court and Court of Appeal, including cases of note outside the London area. He is experienced in all areas of serious crime including murder, violent and sexual offences, firearms, drug importation and supply, arson and fraud.
Jonathan has particular experience in cases which have issues relating to the Islamic community including so-called ‘honour crime’’ and has appeared in cases involving allegations of kidnap, rape and serious violence often within extended families.
Jonathan is a Grade 3 CPS Panel Advocate and Rape List Counsel. In addition to Prosecuting for the CPS, Jonathan is also instructed by the RSPCA to Prosecute offences under the Animal Welfare Act and by the Probation Service.

Currently instructed in:
R v Wilson – ‘A4e Fraud’. Counsel for one of 13 defendants (7 at trial) charged with conspiracy to make and use false documents to defraud the DWP. Ongoing 10 week trial.
R v M - s18 - defence counsel for a man charged with causing ‘life-changing injuries’. Defence includes psychiatric issues arising from sexual violence and torture.
R v R, R and S: Prosecution Counsel in forthcoming trial of 3 defendants charged with baseball bat attack causing fractured skull. Substantial cell site and telephone schedule evidence.
R v R: Prosecution Counsel in forthcoming firearms case.
R v M and others: Defence Counsel in conspiracy to supply Class A drugs and conspiracy to manage brothels.
R v W: Defence counsel for man charged with fraudulent use of Power of Attorney over mother’s affairs in sums of over half a million pounds.
Previous cases of note include:
Murder: R v Satpal Kaur-Singh: Junior Counsel for mother accused of the Murder of her 12-year-old autistic son. Successful submissions led to Prosecution accepting plea to Manslaughter on the grounds of diminished responsibility.
R v Walters & Others: Junior Counsel for one of 5 defendants charged with Murder and Attempted Murder. Client acquitted following 7 week trial at the Central Criminal Court. 3 Defendants convicted.
A murder trial is such good education - April 3, 2006 R v Davis: Instructed post-conviction for appellant convicted of the Murder of his wife. Diminshed Responsibility unsuccessfully run at trial. Appeal against conviction issues included admission of Bad Character and Hearsay evidence and advice regarding decision to not give evidence in his defence.
R v : Defence counsel for one of 3 siblings charged with ‘Honour Violence’ offences of Kidnap, False Imprisonment, ABH. Acquitted of more serious charges and conditionally discharged following month-long trial at Winchester CC.
R v Ali & Others….: Counsel for the first of 4 defendants charged with Kidnap, False Imprisonment and Blackmail. Complainant part of a ‘black-money’ fraud gang. 6 week trial at Kingston CC.
Defended and prosecuted a significant number of Rape and Sexual offence cases, including allegations of child sexual abuse (including co-defending with Queen's Counsel) and abuse of process arguments in relation to historic allegations of abuse.
R v BM: Successful defence of 15-year-old boy charged with the Rape of a 43-year-old woman at a party. Principal eye-witnesses were the mother of the complainant and her young son who had special needs. Issues included capacity to consent due to intoxication.
R v King: Successful defence of man charged with the systematic sexual abuse of his daughter over a 10 year period. Acquitted of all 15 Counts on the indictment.
R v A: Successful defence of devout Muslim charged with the rape of a male. R v Goulbourne: Defence counsel for man with mental health difficulties charged with assault by penetration of a 6-year-old girl.
R v Butler – Defence counsel for one of 7 defendants tried for conspiracy to produce cannabis on an industrial scaled in warehouses across the Midlands. Defendant acquitted of the conspiracy following submission of no case to answer – suspended sentence imposed having pleaded guilty to PWITS.
R v Uddin: Junior Counsel for first of 7 defendants charged with several conspiracies to import heroin from Bangladesh. 3 month trial at Winchester CC. Resulting POCA proceedings saw attempts to confiscate in excess of 1 million pounds and the equity in a number of properties.
R v Sohail: Counsel for one of 7 defendants charged with conspiracy to supply heroin and cocaine. Part of linked conspiracies across South East of England with Prosecutions of 13 defendants at 3 Courts.
R v Bradford: Prosecution of 3-strike burglar who was apprentice chef at Jamie Oliver restaurant
R v Sackett: Prosecution of defendant charged with robbery. Defendant awaiting trial for Murder.
R v Munim & Others: Conspiracy to defraud. Fully contested Fitness to Plead proceedings prior to trial. Subsequent POCA proceedings.
R v Ferguson and others -  All ER (D) 32 (Apr). Counsel for 17-year-old defendant charged with conspiracy to supply class A drugs. Sentence successfully appealed.
Jonathan is a member of the Criminal Bar Association. Jonathan worked for Herbert Smith Solicitors 1999-2000 and was involved in the "Rogue Trader" litigation (Barings Plc v Coopers and Lybrand Singapore). Interests: Jonathan is a keen musician and an enthusiastic sportsman.
