Rhys has recently accepted an offer of tenancy at 9 King’s Bench Walk, having completed 12-month pupillage with Chambers.
Rhys has developed a busy criminal practice and accepts instructions to prosecute and defend in the Crown, Magistrates’ and Youth Courts. Rhys’ experience covers a broad spectrum of criminal offences including violence, offensive weapons, fraud, dishonesty, drugs and domestic abuse.
Rhys is also currently a Grade 2 member of the CPS General Crime Panel.
During pupillage, Rhys was instructed in a significant number of matters in the Crown Courts, including jury trials for prosecution and defence, successfully representing his clients.
Recent cases
Prosecution:
R v H [2025]
At the conclusion of a 3-day trial for breach of notification requirements and breaches of a Sexual Harm Prevention Order, Rhys secured the conviction of a man who refused to maintain contact with his supervising police officer after non-contact for over 9 days.
R v A [2025]
At the conclusion of a 5-day trial for fraud, Rhys secured the conviction of a courier fraudster who would target vulnerable older people and portray himself as a police officer in order to obtain sums in excess of £40,000.
Defence:
R v B [2025]
After making strong legal and factual submissions to the prosecution, including whether it was in the public interest to proceed, the prosecution offered no evidence on all counts of assault of an emergency worker.
R v C [2025]
Following a successful application to exclude Res Gestae evidence, which covered the entirety of the Crown’s case. The Judge entered a not guilty verdict as the prosecution no longer had any evidence.
R v D [2025]
Following robust pre-trial submissions to the CPS, the key issue was identified in their case. The Prosecution discontinued the matter against the defendant.
Prior to joining Chambers, Rhys held several advocacy roles, including as an independent County Court Advocate and a Family Law Paralegal.
Other Experience
As a County Court Advocate, Rhys was instructed on matters often opposing Counsel far beyond his year of call and obtaining successful outcomes at trial. Rhys’ advocacy was complemented by members of the local judiciary, being described as “very good at what you do.”
During his time as a Family Law Paralegal, Rhys would advocate on behalf of his clients and was often recognised for his empathetic yet robust approach to cases, particularly dealing with vulnerable clients who suffered domestic abuse at Non-Molestation Order hearings.
Rhys also helps comprehensive school students prepare for a mock trial competition. Before starting pupillage, Rhys mentored a team of local secondary school students to participate in a competition at Cardiff Crown Court.
Additionally, Rhys qualified as a Mediator in 2022.
