Defendants Sentenced in Online Safety Act Case Prosecuted by Jonathan Mole and Atticus Blick
In what is believed to be the first trial under the Online Safety Act 2023, two defendants have been sentenced for numerous charges including three counts of encouraging or assisting serious self-harm contrary to section 184 of the Online Safety Act 2023.
Jonathan Mole led Atticus Blick in the trial of one of the defendants in October 2025 (the other having plead to all matters) and secured guilty verdicts on all charges including the two section 184 charges. In the course of the two-week trial, Jonathan and Atticus showed that the defendant had on two separate occasions sent digital communications which were capable of encouraging the young victim to cause herself serious self-harm – that is, harm amounting to GBH-level injuries.
The jury were shown a large number of communications across multiple social media and online platforms which comprised the relationship the defendant built with the two vulnerable young women.
As the first trial of this nature, Jonathan and Atticus conducted significant amounts of legal research across many hours of work to suggest a legal course amongst the backdrop of a serious and disturbing case involving two extremely vulnerable young women.
