TRAIN AT HOME - Virtual OIC Roadshow

On 21 May 2020, during the current global pandemic, 9 KBW’s OIC Roadshow successfully presented its first virtual training to newly qualified Direct Access Detective Constables based with Metropolitan Police Romford. All participated virtually from their home address or from their place of work.

The Panel comprised of six members of 9KBW:

Joint Head of Chambers, Mr. Jonathan Mole; Mr. John Clifford; Mr. Robyn Murdo-Smith; Mr. Liam Gregory; Mr. Efstathios Divaris; and, Miss. Claire Stevenson.

The topics which were covered were:

  • Introduction, Codes of Practice, CPIA and PACE;
  • Giving evidence in court;
  • Disclosure;
  • Scene and evidence preservation, architectural maps and design studio; and,
  • Hearsay.

Here is some of the feedback we received:

‘Just wanted to say thank you so much for organising this, Your team are fantastic. I am so glad we could arrange this at short notice. I hope when we can, when safe to do so, all meet up for a mock court trial.’

‘Just wanted to drop you an email to say thank you for sorting this out for us and allowing us to be part of the Court meeting. It was extremely useful, especially only being in Week 8 of my training it made the court process clearer and what is expected of us as officers in court. I am not sure if you could see I was present in the call as I was having some technical difficulties so was using my phone but I heard it all and it was great.’

‘I personally found it really interesting and well presented with each of the counsels covering a topic. Having not yet covered Disclosure or Witness statements in a full lesson it was of great interest to see where the content I have learned is ultimately going in particular the early stages of an investigation and the value of good note taking practice in court. Particularly as the speakers were not police but still rely on our work it’s good to see the full context and reasons why we must have good practice and high standards, as well as making sure to know where the witnessbox is in court! … I didn’t know about the Design team in Lambeth and hadn’t really considered the MET Surveyors in the way explained so can add that to my knowledge now too. Ultimately very much appreciate the members of 9 Kings Bench walk taking some time to present to us, and even for a student officer in early stages some real value attained.’
