Fraud acquittal at Canterbury Crown Court R v G, September and October 2013

John Ojakovoh secures the acquittal of his client in a 7-week VAT fraud trial at Canterbury Crown Court on a single count of Cheating the Public Revenue which alleged that HMRC was defrauded of VAT amounting to approximately £ ¼ million through complicated inter-company transactions involving four companies the fruits of which were said to have been withdrawn by the client. The case involved forensic accounting, commercial and IT issues, extensive legal argument to exclude email and bad character evidence, persistence in pursuing disclosure and public interest immunity issues, and presentation to the jury of a large amount of very complicated information in a simple and persuasive way.
